Am I Ready for a Facelift? 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Scheduling a Consultation

Facial Rejuvenation • Charleston, South Carolina
Many of my patients tell me the same thing: they don’t feel as old as they look. They’re active, confident and enjoying life, but the face looking back at them in the mirror may look more tired, heavier or less defined than they feel.
Sometimes they notice their jawline has changed. Sometimes it’s loose skin beneath the chin or neck. For others, it’s the feeling that fillers, lasers and other nonsurgical treatments simply aren’t producing the same improvement they once did.
That’s often when the question comes up: “Am I ready for a facelift?” There isn’t one perfect age. I look at your anatomy, the changes that are bothering you, what you hope to accomplish and whether surgery—or a nonsurgical treatment—can realistically deliver the result you want.
Are Injectables and Other Nonsurgical Treatments Still Giving You the Result You Want?
Injectables, lasers and other MedSpa treatments can be excellent tools for maintaining skin quality, restoring volume and addressing early signs of facial aging. But there comes a point when adding more volume may not address the actual problem.
If your primary concern has become sagging tissue, jowling, loss of jawline definition or loose skin in the neck, nonsurgical treatments may no longer provide the improvement you’re looking for. A deep plane facelift addresses deeper facial support rather than simply treating the surface.
When the Mirror Starts Telling a Different Story
The decision to explore a facelift is rarely about a birthday. It is more often about recognizing that the treatments that once worked are no longer addressing the structural changes you see.

Are You Noticing Jowling or Loose Skin in Your Neck?
For many patients, this is one of the first significant changes they notice. You may find yourself gently lifting the skin along your jawline or becoming more aware of loose skin beneath your chin in photographs.
Depending on your anatomy, a deep plane facelift with neck lift may address deeper structures while improving the jawline and neck. The objective isn’t simply to make everything tighter. It is to restore a more youthful facial contour while keeping you looking like yourself.

Do You Look Tired Even When You Feel Energetic?
This is something I hear frequently during consultations: “I feel great. I just don’t look the way I feel anymore.”
Changes in the lower face, neck and eyes can create a tired or weathered appearance even when you feel energetic and healthy. The right facial rejuvenation plan depends on where those changes are occurring and should be individualized rather than approached with a standard package.
Are You Seeing Deeper Lines and Folds That Makeup Can’t Hide?
Facial aging occurs at multiple levels: skin quality changes, facial volume changes, and deeper supporting structures change as well. This is why treating every sign of aging with additional filler doesn’t always produce the most natural result.
When deeper structural changes contribute to jowling, facial heaviness and loss of definition, surgical facial rejuvenation may become a more appropriate option.
Do You Feel Like You Suddenly “Aged Overnight”?
Aging doesn’t happen overnight—but sometimes our awareness of it does. A photograph, video call or glance in an unfamiliar mirror can suddenly make changes much more noticeable.
If you find yourself lifting your cheeks or jawline with your fingers, it doesn’t automatically mean you need a facelift. It may mean it’s worth having a consultation to understand what is creating the changes you see.

Are Changes Around Your Eyes or Brows Contributing to an Older or Tired Appearance?
Excess upper-eyelid skin, lower-eyelid changes or brow position can make the eyes appear tired even when the rest of the face looks relatively youthful. For appropriate patients, blepharoplasty or brow rejuvenation may be considered by itself or alongside facelift surgery to create better overall facial balance.
Do You Still Want to Look Like Yourself—Just Refreshed?
This may be the most important question. Most of my patients aren’t asking to look 25 again, and they don’t want to look like someone else. They want friends to notice that they look rested and refreshed without immediately thinking, “She had a facelift.”
My philosophy is to preserve the characteristics that make your face uniquely yours while addressing the changes associated with aging. You should still look like you—just refreshed.

Facelift vs. Nonsurgical Treatments: When Does Each Make Sense?
Nonsurgical treatments remain valuable for skin quality, expression lines and appropriate volume restoration. Surgery addresses something different. When the primary concern becomes facial laxity, jowling, loss of jawline definition or excess neck skin, facelift or neck lift surgery may address structural changes that nonsurgical treatments cannot fully correct.
After surgery, thoughtful nonsurgical treatments and skincare can continue to help maintain skin quality. The goal is to choose the right treatment for the problem we’re trying to solve.
What Happens During a Facelift Consultation With Dr. Sonny O?
A facelift consultation should be much more than asking, “Which facelift do I need?” I want to understand what you’re seeing, what bothers you and what you hope to accomplish.
We’ll evaluate your facial anatomy, skin quality, jawline and neck; discuss appropriate surgical or nonsurgical options; and talk about recovery, expectations and realistic outcomes.
For appropriate candidates, Dr. O performs facelift procedures using local anesthesia, which can be discussed during your individual consultation.
So, Am I Ready for a Facelift?
You may be ready to consider a facelift if you are noticing jowling, loose neck skin or loss of facial definition and nonsurgical treatments no longer provide the improvement you’re seeking.
But being ready for a consultation and being ready for surgery are two different things. You don’t have to walk into my office knowing which procedure you need.
